In Memoriam: Dr Sedick Isaacs

Photo: Sedick (centre, with Jacob Hofdijk, Diarmuid UaConaill and Najeeb Al-Shorbaji - Robben Island Gateway, Cape Town: Sept. 2010)

As many of you will know already, our colleague Sedick Isaacs passed away in Cape Town, South Africa on 18 October at the age of 72. He contributed significantly to the development of health informatics in South Africa, and within Africa for widely (and was the Founding President of HELINA). He represented Africa and South Africa on the IMIA General Assembly and IMIA Board, and many people will have met him at GA meetings. Many will also have met him in Cape Town at Medinfo2010. He is also known for his teaching activities and the significant contributions he made to his country over many years, including his work in developing education and sport among the other prisoners during his 18 years on Robben Island. Some of these latter activities are fictionalised in the film 'More than just a game', and some of his own recollections are covered in his book "Surviving in the Apartheid Prison". (see also http://wp.me/pvCUS-1qy)

HELINA have an online book of condolences on their website, and we invite colleagues to contribute to this - http://www.helina-online.org A moment of remebrance for Sedick was observed at the start of the IMIA Board and General Assembly meetings in Beijing. IMIA sends heartfelt condolences from all our members to Dee and all Sedick's family and friends.

Report from 2012 IMIA General Assembly (Beijing, October 23)
The 2012 IMIA General Assembly was held in Beijing, China on 23 October, in conjunction with the 7th APAMI conference (see header photo, courtesy Antoine Geissbuhler). Further reports and the minutes of the meeting will be provided to GA members; however, among highlights:

Medinfo2017 will be held in Beijing, China. After presentation of three very good bids, CMIA (China Medical Informatics Association) won the vote to host the event. IMIA thanks all three Member Societies and their bid teams for their hard work.
Several new members were approved by the GA, including the Burundi Health Informatics Association and the Ghana Health Informatics Association as Member Soceities (bringing the total to 58, with two additional societies in the application phase), and Claremont Graduate University (Kay Center for E-Health Research, School of Information Systems and Technology), USA, Saudi Electronic University, University of Melbourne, Australia, and University of Seville, Spain as new Academic Institutional Members.
The first two certificates of accreditation were awarded under IMIA's new Accreditation Scheme for health and biomedical informatics programmes: to the Health and Human Services Informatics Master’s Degree Program, University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland; and the Biomedical Informatics Technologist Program, Instituto Professional DuocUC, Santiago de Chile, Chile. Representatives of the two academic institutions attended the GA and received their certificates.
Several IMIA Board members reached the end of their terms of office and new members started. Among key changes, the IMIA Treasurer is now Prof. Sabine Koch, VP Membership is Prof. Michio Kimura, VP Services is Prof. Christoph Lehmann and VP for APAMI is Prof. Ying Wu.

Medinfo2013: Call for Papers, Posters - Deadline 10 December 2012
MEDINFO2013, the 14th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics, will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark: August, 2013 - see http://www.medinfo2013.dk

The full Call for Papers, Student Papers, and Posters and other categories of submission is now available on the Medinfo2013 website - see http://www.medinfo2013.dk/node/13 Congress registration will open in late 2012.

SPC co-chairs Tze-Yun Leong and Domink Aronsky highlight that: The theme for MEDINFO 2013 is “Conducting medical informatics by Converging technologies, Conveying sciences and Connecting people,” with an emphasis on how human-centered, integrative approaches can contribute to usable, adaptive, and cost-effective e-Health solutions for the world. The congress welcomes a broad range of submissions on both emerging methodologies that contribute to the conceptual and scientific foundations of biomedical and health informatics, and successful implementations of innovative application, integration, and evaluation of eHealth systems and solutions. The main program will include keynote and invited talks by leading experts, paper and poster presentations, panel discussions, workshops, as well as system demonstrations. The program will also feature a special “Care for the World” mini-symposium of global, regional, and national initiatives and programs, which highlights the visions, challenges, and opportunities for research and/or industry collaboration and innovation in biomedical and health informatics.

See also the SPC co-chairs' editorial (free download) in the latest issue of 'Methods'.

IMIA Strategic Plan Update and IMIA Yearbook
Thank you to those who have replied to the first survey and request for comment in respect of the work on updating and re-focusing the IMIA Strategic Plan. In the next few months, we will invite IMIA members (in particular Member Societies, Working and Special Interest Groups, and Institutional members) to provide further comment to help us in this work. We ask that you read the current Strategic Plan (on the IMIA website), and consult within their organisations on ideas as to how it should be re-focused and updated. We aim to present the updated and refocused IMIA Strategic Plan to the 2013 General Assembly meeting for final discussion and approval.

IMIA will also be consulting with Member Societies and others on the future financing and delivery of the IMIA Yearbook. We have an 'in principle' future model, but need to consult on the financial issues.

(see also http://wp.me/pvCUS-1qR)

We ask that all colleagues and organisations with students cascade this within their communities.

IMIA History and Archives Project - Seeking Materials
IMIA has a project to develop a "History of International Medical Informatics". The project proposal and taskforce have been lead by Prof. Casimir Kulikowski, who will continue to lead the activities (GA members, please see Beijing GA papers for description). As part of this project, and linked to developing and securing IMIA's archives, we are seeking materials relevant to IMIA and international health, medical and biomedical informatics over the past 50 years. If you have materials that you think might be relevant, and are willing to donate, or allow us to scan and archive, please contact the IMIA Office via imia at imia-services.org to discuss further. We will say more about this project in future newsletters and via other IMIA communications channels. We are very grateful to past IMIA Secretary Diarmuid UcConaill who has already scanned many of his papers from the 1980s onwards to help provide archive materials.
