Health Informatics New Zealand (HINZ) Update
Health Informatics New Zealand (HINZ - http://www.hinz.org.nz) is a
national, not-for-profit organisation whose focus is to facilitate
improvements in business processes and patient care in the health sector
through the application of appropriate information technologies. In
November 2012, HINZ hosted it's 11th annual conference which brought
together more than 350 professionals, respected international presenters
, and vendors representing the latest in eHealth technology. Content
presented at the event, including videos of the plenary sessions, can be
found at http://www.hinz.org.nz/page/conference/conference-2012-post

Featuring at the HINZ conference was a mobile application providing
delegates with the ability to view the conference program, provide live
feedback and answer any questions that came from the floor. At the
event, several awards were given including the Robyn Carr Spirit Cup to
Ann Browett, founding Chair of HINZ for displaying steadfast commitment
and determination in furthering the goals and achievements of nursing
informatics. Julie Lucas received the best student paper award. The
Clinicians Challenge once again provided a unique opportunity for
clinicians and vendors to identify information technology solutions to
solve an important and recurring problem that health professionals face
in their ‘day-to-day' practice. The third annual Clinicians’ Challenge
was won by Dr. Jo Scott-Jones for his case on the role that standing
orders could play in the development of pra
ctice teams and their
facility to improve access for patients to safe, acceptable and
effective care.
Congratulations to CSC who were this year's Clinicians’ Challenge
winning vendor.

After serving two years, Tom Bowden stepped down as HINZ chair and was
succeeded by Liz Schoff. In her term as chair, Liz will apply increased
focus on patient self-management and citizen engagement in the health
system as well as the technical and non-technical changes that will be
needed to enable this. A new IMIA representative was appointed. Dr.
Inga Hunter has practised medicine for more than 20 years in Ireland,
Australia and New Zealand, and has extensive experience in a variety of
clinical settings in general practice, primary, secondary, and tertiary
care. Inga looks forward to meeting the IMIA team at the next
international meeting.

The HINZ 2013 conference will be held in Rotorua and we invite all our
international colleagues to join us in one of the most beautiful places
in the world - New Zealand. The HINZ Executive wishes all our
international friends a safe and happy festive season and New Year.

[Note: we welcome updates on activity from other IMIA Member Societies

IMIA Strategic Plan Update - Final Request for Round 1 Replies
Thank you to those IMIA members and colleagues who completed, or
provided initial thoughts on, the first round survey sent in August
2012. We received very useful material, which has been analysed, but
would like to have input from a greater number and wider range of IMIA
members - in particular IMIA Member Societies. The survey has been
slightly updated to add some new questions. If you have already
completed this survey, there is no need to complete this new version in
full - but you may wish to respond to the additional questions about
progress on the existing IMIA Strategic Plan. The new/updated survey is
downloadable (MS Word document) at
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20289142/IMIA-Strategy-2013/IMIAStrategicPlanUpdate-MemberSurveyandRequestforResponses.doc

Please email your completed survey questions, or any other comments, to
imia-virtual-office at vodamail.co.za and copy to imia at imia-services.org
In addition, please indicate whether the reply is a personal view, or on
behalf of an IMIA Society/Institution/WG, etc. The deadline for
responses is 20 February, 2013 - this will allow us to do analysis and
present an initial report to the IMIA Board at its April meeting.

IMIA History and Archives Project - Seeking Materials
IMIA has a project to develop a "History of International Medical
Informatics". The project proposal and taskforce have been lead by Prof.
Casimir Kulikowski, who will continue to lead the activities. As part of
this project, and linked to developing and securing IMIA's archives, we
are seeking materials relevant to IMIA and international health, medical
and biomedical informatics over the past 50 years. If you have materials
that you think might be relevant, and are willing to donate, or allow us
to scan and archive, please contact the IMIA Office via
imia at imia-services.org to discuss further. We will say more about this
project in future newsletters and via other IMIA communications
channels. W
e are very grateful to past IMIA Secretary Diarmuid UcConaill
who has already scanned many of his papers from the 1980s onwards to
help provide archive materials.
Inventory of Health IT Evaluation Studies
The IMIA WG Health Technology and Quality Assessment and EFMI WG
Assessment of Health Information Systems
(http://www.imia-medinfo.org/new2/node/154 http://iig.umit.at/efmi/)
provide and maintain the Inventory of Health IT Evaluation Studies and
Systematic Reviews. Dr Nicolette de Keizer, Chair of the IMIA Working
Group writes: This repository was created to help researchers to
identify evaluation studies that have been conducted in defined
settings. It now contains more than 1700 references to published
evaluation studies and reviews of evaluation studies of health
information systems. The repository is the result of a systematic
literature search, first conducted in 2003 and updated in 2006, 2009 and
2012. Since 2009, the repository is also updated based on input from
researchers from all over the world. To support this, the repository
website offers the possibility to propose studies that should be entered
into the database. The inventory is available for free at:
http://evaldb.umit.at
