6. EFMI STC 2016 - Paris, France; April 17-19, 2016
The IMIA Board will hold their next Board meeting in cojunction wih
EFMI STC conference in Paris in April. Members of the Board look forward
seeing many of you at the conference.
The European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) and the French
Association for Medical Informatics (AIM) invite you to participate to
the Special Topic Conference (STC) “Transforming Healthcare with the
Internet of Things” to be held in Paris, France, from Sunday 17th to
Tuesday 19th April, 2016 under the auspices of the Laboratoire
d’Informatique Médicale et d’Ingénierie des Connaissances en e-Santé
(LIMICS).
The chosen theme of STC2016 is focusing on the transformation of modern
healthcare by the disruptive innovation of the Internet of Things (IoT).
To better understand the basic idea of the IoT, it is good to go back to
Kevin Ashton, who introduced the term for the first time in 1999. He
stated that “In the real world, things matter more than ideas”. His
original idea was that
“We need to empower computers with their own
means of gathering information, so they can see, hear, and smell the
world for themselves, in all its random glory. RFID and sensor
technology enable computers to observe, identify, and understand the
world—without the limitations of human-entered data.”

7. ICIMTH2016 - Athens, Greece; July 1-3, 2016

9. Journal of Health Informatics in Africa

We have the pleasure to announce the new issue of the Journal of Health
Informatics in Africa (JHIA; ISSN/NLM abbreviation J Health Inform Afr).
www.jhia-online.org This fourth issue passes an important milestone in
the life of an academic journal. With this issue, the JHIA has published
altogether 32 double-blind peer-reviewed full research papers: 15 in
2013 in volume 1 issue 1, 4 in 2014;2(1), 10 in 2014;2(2), and 3 in this
2015;3(1). JHIA has now fulfilled the minimum criteria for digital
archiving in PubMed Central (PMC). We will therefore apply for an
agreement with PMC.

The second issue of 2015 is under preparation and to be published
around the end of this year. New submissions are welcome – if you submit
soon and the reviewers do not require time-consuming modifications, your
paper can still be published this year.

The current issue is also the last one for which Mikko Korpela is the
editor in charge. Dalenca Pottas is in charge of the next issue. We have
invited Frank Verbeke and Nicky Mostert-Phipps, the Scientific Programme
Co-Chairs of HELINA 2014, to join the editorial team.

I wish to express my deepest gratitude and thanks to Prof. Mokko
Korpela for his uninterrupted contribution to the development of health
and biomedical informatics in Africa. Mikko accepted without hesitation
to become the first editor-in-chief of an idea called “Journal of Health
Informatics in Africa” (JHIA). He brings JHIA from an idea to the
threshold of becoming an indexed, acknowledged and stable international
scientific journal for the Health and Biomedical Informatics in Africa
community. Mikko, thank you for all your support! It has been a
privilege to work with you.
