Prof. Michio Kimura (Hamamatsu University, Japan), current President of APAMI, the Asia Pacific Association for Medical Informatics, is pleased to announce that the Call for Bids for the APAMI 2014 conference is now open. Completed bids should be sent to APAMI Secretary John Chiang (email: ijchiang at gmail.com) by September 10, 2012.

The APAMI conference will, in future, be held in alternate years to Medinfo (ie, 2012, 2014, 2016, etc). It can be in spring, summer, or fall. Bids must be from an IMIA Member Society, and must include: Official letter from the IMIA Member Society to show the intention to host; theme explanations; venue and dates explanations, financial estimates. The host country/region has to agree to pay 10,000USD or 10% of the revenue of the conference (whichever higher) to APAMI after the conclusion of the the conference.

The final decision will be made at the APAMI GA in Beijing, which will be held at the APAMI 2012 conference, 22-25 October.

An Invitation to Participate in a Delphi Study to Define "eHealth"
Christian Nøhr (Professor in the Department of Development and Planning at Aalborg University, Denmark) and and Chris Showell (eHealth researcher and PhD student with the eHealth Services Research Group in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Tasmania, Australia) write (see http://wp.me/pvCUS-1nO):
Following a presentation at MIE2012 in August (Showell, C., & Nøhr, C. (2012). How Should We Define eHealth, and Does the Definition Matter? Studies in health technology and informatics, 180, 881–884.), we are setting up a Delphi study to discover whether there is a good consensus definition of "eHealth". We would like to involve as many people as possible, from academia (researchers, teachers and students) the healthcare industry (practitioners, support staff and administrators), health IT (vendors, developers, implementers) as well as patients and citizens.

If you are interested in participating, you can view details of the project at define-ehealth.com, and register if you would like to be a part of the study. The organisers of the study would also like the invitation and the link to be passed on to anyone else you think might be interested.

IMIA Strategic Plan Update
Work has started to update and re-focus, as needed, the IMIA Strategic Plan. The 2007 IMIA Strategic Plan was titled Towards IMIA 2015. In less than 6 months it will be 2013. The IMIA Board and General Assembly would like to investigate the “why, what, and how” for the future of IMIA, based on what we learned and what we know today.

A first survey and request for comment was sent to all IMIA Member Societies, Institutional Members, and WG/SIG chairs in mid August. We know it is a tight timescale, but we would like first responses (even if incomplete or provisional) by 20 September, 2012. This will allow us to analyse your initial thoughts and present a report for discussion at the 2012 IMIA General Assembly meeting. Please email your comments to imia-virtual-office at vodamail.co.za and copy to imia at imia-services.org In addition, please indicate whether the reply is a personal view, or on behalf of an IMIA Society/Institution/WG, etc.

Note: if you did not receive this survey, please let us know and we will send a further copy - also, please check that emails from us are not being 'eaten' by your spam filters. Congratulations to Eustache Muteba Ayumba, IMIA Corresponding Member in the DR Congo, who was the first to return a completed survey.

A core taskforce, modeled on that recruited by IMIA Past President Nancy Lorenzi for the original IMIA Strategic Plan work, is steering the work, and is as representative of the breadth of IMIA as a small group can be; the members are Antoine Geissbuhler (Chair), Lincoln de Assis Moura, Jr. (Vice chair), Nancy Lorenzi, Fernando Martin-Sanchez, Christian Lovis, Lucy Westbrooke, Alvaro Margolis, John Holmes, S B Gogia, Peter Murray.

We invite IMIA members (in particular Member Societies, Working and Special Interest Groups, and Institutional members) to read the current Strategic Plan (on the IMIA website), and consult within their organisations on ideas as to how it should be re-focused and updated. We aim to present the updated and refocused IMIA Strategic Plan to the 2013 General Assembly meeting for final discussion and approval.

Call for Proposals: AMIA Joint Summits on Translational Science
The AMIA Joint Summits on Translational Science will be held on March 18-22, 2013, in San Francisco, CA, USA. See http://www.amia.org/jointsummits2013 for full information or the IMIA News item at http://wp.me/pvCUS-1m4
The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) solicits papers on the state-of-the-art in translational bioinformatics and clinical research informatics. All proposals must be submitted through the AMIA submission sites in accordance with the following deadlines:
• Paper Proposals Due: September 27, 2012
• Panels, Posters, and Podium Abstract Proposal Due: October 11, 2012

Call for Papers: The Electronic Health Record and Nursing
The Call for Papers is open for a special issue of the open access journal "Nursing Research and Practice" - the theme will be "The Electronic Health Record and Nursing: Trends, Issues and Challenges". See http://www.hindawi.com/journals/nrp/si/956501/cfp/ for full information; and IMIA News item at http://wp.me/pvCUS-1ma. The closing date for submission of manuscripts is Friday, 14 September, 2012.

Lead Guest Editor Andre Kushniruk (School of Health Information Science, University of Victoria, Victoria, BC, Canada) and Guest Editors Hyeoun-Ae Park (College of Nursing Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea), Carola Hullin Lucay Cossio (IMIA LAC: Regional Federation of Health Informatics for Latin America and the Caribbean) and Elizabeth Borycki (School of Health Information Science and School of Nursing, University of Victoria) invite colleagues to contribute original research articles as well as review articles. There are many reported difficulties and issues worldwide in implementing electronic health records (EHRs) so that they maximize their beneficial potential and minimize inadvertent negative efforts for both health professionals and patients. This special issue will examine trends, issues, and challenges emerging from implementation of electronic health records and related information technologies in nursing settings.
